Steve Hines Endowment for Creativity in Teaching

Join us to support creativity in teaching.

The earnings from this endowment are used to further develop the "Diagnostic Challenge” instructional program and provide funding to develop additional innovative and creative approaches to instruction in the veterinary curriculum of the College of Veterinary Medicine.

The Diagnostic Challenge is an annual multidisciplinary, case-based exercise that began at WSU in 1991 to help students learn in a simulated "real world" setting. During our annual Diagnostic Challenge, students have opportunities to diagnose patients and work with volunteer clients in situations comparable to what they will experience in their own practices. The exercises are conducted collaboratively by instructors from across the veterinary college. Visiting veterinarians, often WSU College of Veterinary Medicine alumni, play the essential roles of case facilitators.

To celebrate Steve Hines’ passion and commitment to “make teaching matter,” the college added his name to this fund upon his retirement after 31 years of service and leadership in the College of Veterinary Medicine.

The initial funds to endow this account were provided to the College of Veterinary Medicine as the 1995 Merck AgVet Award for Creativity in Teaching. The WSU program in "diagnostic challenge" was judged the most creative teaching innovation in national competition and was awarded the $25,000 top prize. It has always been our hope that additional donations will be made to the endowment to increase its size and its support of this program.
